Aibertotti {loc. cit.) endeavoured to securea copy of the work that he might comparethe MS. of the 1627 French translation,found in the Bibliotbcque Nationale withthe original, but the Paris Library did notpossess one; moreover, none of the seven170. More recently R. GreefT (Zeitscbr. J. , 97) has given a review of the Valdez treatise,based on the French translation transcribed byAibertotti. 150 The First Scientific Work on Spectacles 5 great European libraries that were luckyenough to own a Valdcz would loan it to aforeigner. With the exception of two exam-ples, one in Washington and one in theBritish Museum, the eight known copiesare held in Spain. Albertotti heard of a copy that had beenfor sale in Paris; I believe this to be theexample that, bought by a London dealer,found its way to the Surgeon GeneralsLibrary. Val
