When the President of the United States came here a year ago, he was escorted down Broad street by the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry. When he reached Broad and Chestnut streets a man on the curb said to a friend, *' Now is your chance to take ofif your hat to the ; His friend said he wouldn't, in language more forceful than elegant. Hearing this, a Quaker rushed forward, doffed his hat, and shouted "Hooray!" A feeble cheer from the crowd followed. The enthusiasm that greeted Presi- dent Taft when he reached this city to attend the Clover Club binquet in the Bellevue-Stratford .January 17 was in marked contrast to his > former recep- tion. The streets wefe crowded, the people cheered, and the distinguished men who gathered at the dinner gave him a hearty reception. The decora- tions arranged in the palm garden, used for the first time for such an affair, were most effective. The center table, made in the shape of a cloveleaf, was hollow, surrounding a group of palms and ferns. From this table ran other long, narrow tables in the fashion ap- proved for bringing many persons in
