Talmont-sur-Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: traditional wooden family-owned fishing huts or cabins, built on stilts and reached by walkways from the shore, line the banks of the River Gironde where it flows into the Atlantic about half-way down the western French coast. At high tide from August to October, fishermen use winches to alternately lower & raise their carrelets, square mesh fishing nets stretched over metal frames, to harvest shrimps and small fish such as sardines. The cabins are one of the sights which attract numerous visitors to this fortified medieval village, which enjoys official status as one of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (The Most Beautiful Villages of France).
