To explain this phenomenon 120 FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS. the occurrence of inflammatory changes at the seat offracture—L e., a traumatic spondylitis (Ktimmell)—hasbeen assumed ; but in view of the occurrence of analogousprocesses in other fractures, and especially in view ofthe relatively frequent occurrence of fracture of the bodyof a vertebra without serious symptoms, this assumptiondoes not appear justifiable. In these cases the symptomsmust be regarded as due to secondary disturbancesdeveloping at the seat of a slight fracture of the vertebrawhich had at first been overlooked. 2. Fractures of the Vertebral Column or Spinous Processes These fractures are rare, and when they do occur, areusually combined with fracture of the body of the verte-bra. We distingu
