Virtues and Limitations of theDiesel-type Engine The Diesel engine is economical because it will burna low grade of fuel and upon combustion of the oil, asin the gasoline engine, practically all of the mechanicalenergy is imparted directly to the piston. The main-tenance cost, however, is high. This is still an unknownquantity in the Lincoln plant since records are not keptwhich permit separating the labor and overhead costsfrom those of the steam equipment. Since the Busch-Sulzer engine is designed for piston cooling, the localcondition of the water in Lincoln has made the lubrica-tion cost of this engine higher than on the ot
