Inall the public schools, the instruction givenis purely of a secular character. Thenumber at present established is aboutfifteen, with from twenty-five to ninetyscholars at each; and it is incumbent onthe Education Boards of any district, when-ever it is shown to their satisfaction thattwenty children are residing at a greaterdistance than three miles from an existingschool, to provide one for their Education Boards also grant sums attheir discretion in aid of efforts m;ide byprivate individuals or associations for the. The piinclpal religious denominations inthe Province are—Episcopalian, RomanCatholic, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan, Allof these have places of worship at or nearthe centres of population, and their mini-sters visit the out-lying districts as occasionmay require. The Roman Catholics, onaccount of their objection to the system ofsecular education, have also establishedtheir own schools, which are not, however,confined exclusively to their body, but arethrown open to children of all religiousdenominations. They are well attended,and satisfaction is expressed by parentssending their children to them at the classof instruction given.
