There are manymeritorious inventions of hives and fixtures, and methods of manipulation, that are al-lowed to go almost unnoticed by bee-keep-ers, or tried in such a meager way that noreal test is made. Over twenty years ago I became convincedthat a shallow brood-frame was a necessityto the producer of fancy comb honey; and Imade a test, using about twenty hives con-taining shallow frames —one style built byMr. F. A. Salisbury. This hive was con-structed for outdoor wintering. It hadclosed-end frames, double-walled sides witha dead-air space between, and a bottom-board of double thickness with an entrancecut in between, allowing the beesto enter under theframes. Theframes were about4X19, outsidemeasurement
