The result was a popularityfor Claudes pictures which extended through-out the eighteenth century and on intothe following one. He was regarded as thegreatest of landscape-painters. When, how-ever, Frenchmen began to turn to nature di-rectly, they soon discovered Hobbemas workand made it the foundation of their own ef-forts ; carrying the truth to nature in theirwork even further than he did in EACH LITTLE GIRL IS NEAT AND SWEET, AND ALL ARE QUAINTLY DRESSED.
