For the administration of an anaesthetic, the patientshould be in the recumbent posture and the head turnedto one side, as in this position mucus is less apt to collectin the pharynx and interfere with the breathing. In administering ether, two to four drachms are pouredinto a cone or inhaler and placed over the nose and mouthof the patient. He is then requested to take deep breaths,or to blow the ether away, which latter procedure causes. Alliss ether inhaler. ANAESTHETICS. 195 him to take deep inspirations. In the beginning of ether-ization the patient will resist the inhalation much lessvigorously if the ether is given slowly with a plentiful ad-mixture of air. The first effect of the inhalation of etheris to produce acceleration of the pulse and respiration ; themucous membrane of the air-passages is irritated, andcoughing often occurs; there is also in this stage a dispo-sition to muscular movements, and it is frequently neces-sary to restrain the patient; the brain also is excited, andthe patient is apt to cry out. These symptoms call for acontinuance of the administration of the ether, and not forits withdrawal. Succeeding the stage of excitement, ifthe ether be pushed, profound anaesthesia takes place, asis evidenced by the loss of consciousness, relaxation ofthe muscular system, moist skin, loss of special senses, contracted pupils, and slow and deep respirati
