The genus Centropristes has the body robust, somewhat com-pressed, covered with rather large ctenoid scales; mouth large, formedas in Serrainis and Paralabrax, the canines small; preopercle serrate,the lower teeth somewhat antrorse; supraoccipital and parietal withstrong crests extending forward to between the postfrontal processes;smooth area on top of head very short and small; dorsal short, X, 11 ;anal HI, 7; caudal usually 3-lobed or double concave; canines veryweak.
