Thelatter spent his childhood and early youth inworking upon his fathers farm in the sum-mer and attending the public schools for thefew months in the year when they were pro-vided. He was especially interested in booksand study, and read with great eagerness thefew books of history and literature whichwere to be found in the library and the log-houses of the neighbors. He had an especialtaste for mathematics, and learned the ele-ments of trigonometry and surveying before ^he was sixteen years old. In the spring of1821 he was employed as rod man by DavidThomas, then chief engineer of the Erie Canal.
