At the centennial in Charlotte in 1875 there was pres-ent a citizen of Union county who was then considerably overone hundred years of age, and had as a lad been present at the 12 signing of the famous Declaration on May 20th, 1775. Thiscounty has the honor of having given President Andrew Jacksonto the nation. Where his parents lived, some miles west of Mon-roe, is well known, as is also the place of his birth in Jacksontownship—named for him—in this county. Union county waserected, as the statute puts it, in 1842. The magistrates inthe territory of the new county were instructed to meet andform a county government, which they did on the first Mondayin April, 1843, at La Batts crossroads (old Tindel place.). rXION COUNTY HOME FOR .\GED .\ND There being a dispute between the Whigs and Democrats as towhether the county should be named Clay or Jackson, the wordUnion was suggested and adopted as a compromise and becausethe new county was created from parts of two others. 13 TOWNS. Monroe, the capital, is of course the largest town of thecoimty, but there are two others of considerable , situated, ten miles east of Monroe, is a thriving townof several hundred inhabitants and does a large mercantile busi-ness. It has a roller flour mill and a good local newspaper, OurHome, which has been run for about 8 years by Mr. J. Z. , ten miles southeast of Monroe, has a population of800, and several large mercantile houses which do an extensivebusiness in furnishing a large area of terri
