Close-up of a venetian terrazzo floor decoration of Via XX Settembre street in the centre of Genoa with the date 1909, Liguria, Italy
The Genoese craftsmen learned the technique of making terrazzo pavement from the Venetians in the seventeenth century. An irresistible stimulus for the shy but enterprising Genoese masters who already in the following century began to characterize these floors with their own decorations in marble mosaic of every cut and style. The Genoese pavement was born in the early '900 when it began to use cement as a binding element. The novelty consisted in being able to obtain a wide range of colors in the decorations being able not only to vary the color of the marble but finally also that of the binder by means of iron oxides.
