He soon discovered that the Toriesin the city were in constant communicationwith Governor Tryon and the British shipsin the harbor. Severe measures were at onceadopted to stop this intercourse. A con-spiracy for the recovery of the city by Tryonwas discovered, and his agents were foundtampering with the American soldiers. OneThomas Hickey, a deserter from the Britisharmy, was hanged for mutiny, sedition andtreachery, and this vigorous measure atonce put a stop to the plots of the CONTINENTAL BILLS. Washington and the army, and ordered agold medal to be struck in commemorationof the deliverance of Boston. The British fleet remained in Nantasketroads for several days after the evacuation ofBoston, and then bore away for was fearful that its destinationwas New York, and leaving General Wardwith five regiments to hold Boston, hastenedsouthward with the main body of the reached New York on the thirteenthof April, and set to work with vigor to putthe city and its approaches in a state of Congress, in February, 1776, found itselfobliged to issue four millions of dollars otadditional paper money in order to meet theexpenses of the war, which were heavier thanhad been supposed.
