The historical district of Luang Prabang city is an atmospheric mix of traditional Lao style wooden homes, French colonial buildings, and old temples beautifully nestled amongst the trees. Half of the original temples built prior to French colonization still stand and the area has become a laid back tourist attraction that has so far escaped over development. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was awarded the designation in 1995.
