Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Woman's head and shoulders covered in lesions due to Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), also known as erythema multiforme major. SJS is an immune system reaction to drugs or viral infection. In this case the patient was receiving drug treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. These lesions are treated as burns, with saline compresses and skin pain can be relieved with local anaesthetics. Treatment for SJS requires removal from the offending drugs, followed by the re-introduction for alternatives to combat the original condition. Hospital care is advised as severe cases of the gastrointestinal or respiratory membranes may be fatal.
