Large wooden buildings for the various purposesof the road are erected at the end of the pier, where thefreight and passengers are received and discharged to andfrom the boats and cars. Along the surface of this vast pier are innumerable tracksand switches, the iron veins along which circulates inces-santly the life-blood of a great railway depot. The land atthe head of the pier is all made ground on which the com-panys buildings The view of the village from the end of the pier is quiteworth pausing to admire before taking a seat in the cars. At the head of the pier stands the village of Piermont, onthe slope of the hill and at its base, around the companyswork-shops and engine-houses. The company has built themost of its own cars and many of its own engines.
