WWII air-raid shelter & decoy control centre used to ignite controlled fires on Ffrith Mountain, Flintshire, UK, designed to deceive German bombers.

View W of a WWII air-raid shelter & decoy control centre used to ignite controlled fires on Ffrith Mountain, Flintshire, designed to confuse the Luftwaffe into dropping bombs away from local steel & chemical works & the Liverpool Docks. The entrance is protected by three angled brick walls or blast deflectors. Troughs & baskets filled with combustible materials, topped by tar & roofing felt & gravity fed with fuel from distant tanks were ignited by detonators fired from the control centre using a network of battery-powered cables. The site was opened in 1941 manned by RAF personnel mainly to protect the ICI Valley Works at Rhydymwyn, and abandoned in May 1943. The view to Ffrith Mountain is masked by alder trees.
