His talents werealready known, when, in 1812, M. deFontanes attached him to the Univer-sity of Paris, as assistant in the Pro-fessorship of History, in the Facultyof Letters, and not long afterwardsnamed him Professor of Modern His-tory, a chair which he was peculiarlyfitted to occupy with distinction. Inthe winter of 1812, he married Made-moiselle Pauline de Meulau, a lady ofbirth, whose family had been ruinedby the Revolution, and who supportedherself and others of her family byjournalism. She was engaged in theeditorship of a magazine called ThePublicist, and it is said that the as-sistance she received in the conduct.
