The Artizan . e work to be bored is fixed, admits of vertical andhorizontal adjustment, thus giving great facilities for centering, andobviating the necessity of using loose packings, thus effecting considerablesaving of time and insuring accuracy. The boring head is caused to progress by a self-acting feed operatingthrough the hollow head stock spindle. This machine is capable ofdrilling the hole requisite to allow the boring head to be entered, andthe largest made by Messrs. Collier will bore a cylinder 4ft. in diameterand 8ft. long. Figs. 3 and 4 represent one of Messrs. Colliers platebending machines. The rollers are 12ft. 3in. in length and 18in. indiameter, and are made with wrought iron centres passing through theirentire length. The top roller is adjustable by means of screws and crosshandles, by means of which the machine is set to give the requisite curveto any plate which may be undergoing the process of bending. The accompanying woodcuts, figs. 5 and 6, represent respectively an Fig. elevation and of one of Messrs Colliers double lever punching, shearing, and bar-cutting machines. The massive framing of the machine is planed at each end to receive the punching and shearing slides, whichare actuated by levers resting upon cams on the main driving shaft; ofthese cams there are two so fixed as to be diametrically opposite, andthus the punching and shearing portions of the machine are actuatedalternately. The cams are furnished with circular rollers, which aci upon the leversduring the operations of punching and shearing, the objects of using thesebeing to reduce the friction. The levers are made of wrought iron, and Fio. 6.
