The cold thenpenetrates into the rooms and makes it necessary to placelanterns along the wall to prevent the goods in storage fromfreezing. Since there are only two small windows on each floorin this section (84 feet), it must be assumed that this dif-flculty is caused by the increased atmospheric pressure onthe outside of the wall which enables the cold to penetrateeven the insulation. The top story of the building is not refrigerated and itwas therefore necessary to insulate the entire ceiling of thesixth story. This could not prevent the cold from passingup through the columns supporting the roof and these were,therefore, made of cast-iron and the hollow space insideof the column was filled with granulated cork, for a dis-tance of four feet above the floor line.
