Early days of flight American air pioneer/ inventor Colonel S F Cody. His real name was Samuel Franklin Cowdery (1867-1913) but used the name S F Cody on his marriage cert. He was also a flamboyant showman, and is often confused with Buffalo Bill Cody, whose surname he adopted when young. Like him, he became a Wild West showman. As an early pioneer of manned flight, he worked on large kites, then known as Cody War-Kites, which were used by the British before World War I for artillery spotting.
