Mitosis. Illustration of a cell undergoing mitosis (nuclear division), part of the process of cell division to form two identical daughter cells. Clockwise from left; Interphase: the cell is at rest - chromatin (red) can be seen in the nucleus. Prophase: the chromatin begins to condense into chromosomes, centrosomes (blue) are seen and microtubules (lines) begin to invade the nuclear space. Metaphase: chromosomes align along the centre of the cell. Anaphase: chromosomes split and the microtubules shorten. Telophase: chromosomes begin to decondense and are surrounded by newly formed nuclear envelopes. Mitosis is usually followed by cytokinesis, when the cell splits into two new daughter cells.
