He allowed the beastto come within three yards (the distance was easilymeasured afterwards in the trampled grass), andthen shot him in the head with my Mauser. Thisgave the elephant such a shock that he turned and fled. Meanwhile the first elephant had collapsed on tothe ground. I loaded the double-barrelled gun, andwe approached cautiously from beliind. Abderahmanpulled his tail, and as he did not stir, we knew thathe was dead. I shook the brave Soudanese warmly bythe hand ; I have come across many instances of fear-less courag
