View SE of Barmekin of Echt Iron Age hillfort, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, showing the E entrances through the inner two stone ramparts. There are five concentric lines of defence encirling the rounded summit of Barmekin Hill representing at least two phases of construction. The three outer rings of earthen banks & ditches enclose an area around 150m across & are pierced by five entrances. The two inner stone walls have two entrances each with the inner & outer gateways aligned on each other. The massively-built inner wall encloses an area with a diameter of c 112m.
