One of Daniels sons removed to Canan-daigua, where Lyman Cooley, grandfather of thepresent subject, was born and spent his life. Thegrandson received his preparatory education inthe district schools and the Cananilaigua Academy;and at the age of nineteen he entered the UnitedStates Naval Academy at Annapolis. Previous tograduation as a cadet engineer in 1878 he hadmade two practice cruises, — in the summer of1875 on the United States ship Alert, and in the. MORTLMKR ELWVN COOLEY summer of 1877 on tl^s Mayflower. During theyear following graduation he was on a Europeancruise attached to the Quinnebaug, and in 1879-1880 completed his sea duty on a North Atlanticcruise with the United States ship .Alliance. Forone year he was connected with the bureau ofSteam Engineering in the Navy Department, andin 1881 was detailed by the department to teachSteam Engineering and Iron Ship-building at theUniversity of Michigan. He was at once appointedProfessor of Mechanical Engineering, and 1885resigned his commission in the Navy. In additionto his University work he has conducted a general practice as a mechanical engineer, has acted asconsulting engineer for a number of our State in-stitutions, and has been otherwise employed in theduties of military and civil offices.
