It is 140 GUIDE-BOOK OF THE. named after the creek on which it stands, at its junctionwith the Susquehanna, though Mr. Willis asserts the nameshould be written Owago—that is, swift river, the verytranslation given by some to the word Chenango. But,indeed, there is much uncertainty and fancy in these sametranslations, for we have often heard half a dozen mean-ings assigned to some of the aboriginal terms. Like Bing-hamton, Owego is placed in a level, fertile part of the val-ley, and on the margin of the Susquehanna, here crossedby a wooden bridge. The first clearing was made in 1791,
