The reptiles werevery numerous in these re-gions, for one can find manytracks or prints in these lay-ers of sandstone. Some movement of theearth made the mountains,east and west, rise higher andthe east side of the valleydropped a Httle, as the tiltedrocks show. The Connecti-cut river flowed faster, sothat it wore down the sand-stone and carried nearly halfof it away. But the trap wasso much harder and tougherthat it was left standing astwo ridges of hills. MountHolyoke and Mount Tom,. and the long ridge to the volcano Wcrk: map by William Orr. south, between West Springfield and Westfield, and the lower,parallel ridge. Little Tom, with the ridge between Tathamand Paucatuck, as well as Provin Mountain on which is ourequalizing reservoir. The trap rock also forms Titans Pier andTitans Piazza. The volcanic rock can be seen exposed toview in the trap rock quarries; also in the railroad cut between 10 HISTORY OF SPRINGFIELD Tatham and Paucatuck in West Springfield. Out of it is madethe macadam for the streets. The remains of the crater ofthis long extinct volcano can still be seen, not far from Titanspier at the foot of Mount Holyoke.
