Margaret of Burgandy strangled in prison. Margaret of Burgandy, 1290 - 1315. As the first wife of Louis X of France, she was Queen of France and Navarre. Accused of being entangled in an adulterous affair, she and her sister Blanche were imprisoned. Popular legend has it Margaret was strangled on the orders of her husband to make way for a new wife. The record seems to show she died of illness caught in the prison. Nevertheless, King Louis remarried five days later. After a work by Horace Vernet.
