North end of Elgin Bridge, the first permanent bridge to be built across the Singapore River, set against the CBD skyline and ERP toll gantry on right

Elgin Bridge spans the Singapore River and is the first bridge of Singapore. First completed in 1820 as a timber foot bridge, it was rebuilt 5 times before its present concrete form in 1929. The cast iron lamps were designed by Italian sculptor, Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli, and bronze plaques engraved with the crest of the Singapore Municipal Commission (with a lion standing in front of a royal palm tree) can also be found below the lamps. It was gazetted as a National Monument in 2019.
