Located by the Mediterranean in Alexandria, Egypt, the spectacular Bibliotheca Alexandrina Library is a homage to - and re-imagining of - the Ancient Library of the City; this perished by fire in antiquity, 2000 years in 2009, this new cultural centre not only houses space for eight million books, but a range of conference centres, art galleries and exhibitions. Here we see a singularly appropriate subject for a modern sculpture, located by the main entrance to the library - Hypatia. She was a distinguished philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who lived in Alexandria, Egypt from c 360 to 415 CE. Regretfully, due to her unfortunate lack of a penis, she was ignored for millennia. It is fitting that she now proudly stands in a place of learning, in a country where women's rights are not always secure.
