A pair of Harlequin or ornate ghostpipefish, Lembeh Straits, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Ghost pipefish are thought to have evolved camouflage that mimics the crinoids in which they often make their home. Unlike their close relatives, the seahorses, the female (left) carries her own eggs in a pouch formed from modified fins. Lembeh Strait in N Sulawesi is famous for its unusually high marine biodiversity, particularly of unusual animals that live on the exposed sand areas.
