The bay, a well-protected laguna,offers such a well-sheltered haven of refuge thatone has difficulty in discovering its union withthe blue waters of the Pacific, directly underthe protecting bluffs of Point Loma, towards thesouthwest. Point Loma reaches out like a strongarm into the open sea to shield the city from thenagging of the prevailing summer winds. Oppo-site San Diego on the small, protective tongue ofland which, together with the mainland formsthe harbor, the quaint architectural features of [34]. One recalls thepleasant warmth of its gentle waves, lapping atthe apparently interminable sand link, so poetic-ally called the Silver Thread. It is a mostbeautiful thread, a gently curving line of wonder-ful rhythmic grace. No violent action of theocean formed that line. It has all the qualityof slow and careful growth such as could havebeen possible only under a clime free from thestronger contrast of natures activities.
