The Iroquois possessed some excellent traits of character,for they honored a pledge when once given ; they respected atreaty when ratified ; they had proper regard for their own lawsand customs and they possessed strong social and domesticfeelings. Notwithstanding all these good qualities, their historyis a continuous story of rapine and bloodshed. The avowedpurpose of the chiefs who entered into a league and formed theconfederacy of the Five Nations, was to cultivate the arts ofpeace and abolish war. In this they were unsuccessful.
