Statue of Saint Catherine of Siena in Rome, Italy

Staue of Saint Catherine of Siena sculpted in white marble by Francesco Messina (1900-1995) in 1961. Catherine of Siena was proclaimed one of two patron saints of Italy in 1939, the other being St. Francis of Assisi. She was born on 25 March 1347 in Siena – and died 29 April 1380 in Rome. Part of the Dominican Order and a Scholastic philosopher and theologian, she worked to bring the papacy of Gregory XI back to Rome from its displacement in France and to establish peace among the Italian city-states.
