Gateway & wall to the fortified Close of Brecon Cathedral, Powys, Wales, UK, looking NE from Priory Hill. The iron gates bear ecclesiastical arms of bishop's hat & fleur-de-lis along with the eagle symbol of St John the Evangelist to whom the church is dedicated. A Norman Benedictine priory was founded here in 1093 on the site of an earlier Celtic church & cult of the C5th/C6th virgin martyr St Eluned, daughter of King Brychan. Rebuilt in Gothic style around 1215, the priory was dissolved in 1537 to become Brecon Parish Church. When the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon was established in 1923 the church became a cathedral. The cathedral has a round churchyard & a walled Close.
