Outcrop of what appears to be lignite or brown coal along the beach at Wissant in northern France

The coastline near Wissant in northern France is famous for its geological interest. The formations of Gault or Glauconitic sands and clays of Wissant relate to the Cretaceous Period. I am not a geologist, but I think that this photo shows what appears to be lignite or a soft peat like coal that occurs as a series of outcrops along the beach.
