With a heavy, stout team, thirty to fifty stumps may be removed in a day. The chain should be veryheavy ; inch rod is none too large, but no great amount of length is lever should be about twenty-five feet long, of hard wood, and some twelveor fifteen inches through at the LEVER STUMP PULLER. Roll the large end of the lever up to the stump, dig a hole under the roots sothat the chain may be put around that and the lever, then hitch the team to theemail end of the lever and drive on a circle ; this will tear away the root and aportion of th stump ; tluMi hitch to anothrrroot, and so on until all are rcinoxccL HOW TO REMOVK STUMPS. 393 The lever may rest against the body of the stump above the roots. Onechain six feet long will be sufficient for a neighborhood, and I think it advisablefor farmers to have some arrangement of this kind for removing stumps, insteadof plowing and mowing around these obstacles year after year. The first to the fifteenth of April is the best time to stump land. The soil issoft and spongy, and a stump that is immovable in June will readily jerk out inApril. Another Device.—
