Large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula). This common damselfly is found in its adult form from mid April until late September. It is very hardy and is able to exist in sites that would be too dry for most damselflies or dragonflies. Damselflies are predators of other insects, often catching prey mid-flight. They spend much of their life as aquatic larvae, where they feed off other small invertebrates.
