Geothermal power. Geothermal electricity generation plant. Heat from underground rocks can be used to boil water into steam to drive turbines which are connected to electricity generators. Geothermal heat is created by the energy released by radioactive decay of atoms, chemical changes under pressure and movements within the Earth. Geothermal power stations are only commercially viable where faults in the Earth's crust allow molten rock to bring heat near the surface at a fast rate. Photographed near Geyserville in California, USA.
