Havis Amanda, the mermaid staue and fountain which symbolises the rebirth of Helsinki.

Ville Valgren's mermaid statue (Merenneito) was erected in the Market Square in Helsinki in 1908, and is intended to represent the rebirth of Helsinki. Initially controversial, due partly to the nudity of the mermaid, the statue has gradually become accepted as an embodiment of the spirit of the city, and forms the focal point of the Vappu (May Day) celebrations.
