It can be fitted to any locomotive now using —saturated steam by the application of a newsmokebox, and it tan rlso be removed from anylocomotive without interfering with its operationwith saturated steam by simply replacing thesuperheater with the ordinary steam pipes. Inbrief, the superheater consists of two cast steelherders on either side, which aie cored with the thence down through both the inner and outer groups of theforward section and through a passage way in the lowerheader to the saddle. These tubes are heated by the gasesfrom the fire tubes and the deflecting plates are so arrangedas to compel these gases to circulate around the tubes on bothsides to the front end of the smoke box and thence backthrough the center to the stack. Thus the superheater usesonly such heat as is ordinarily wasted through the stack, andwhatever gain in superheat is obtained is clear gain. Experi-.
