Thompson, son of Alexander Thomp-son and Isabella Penman, was born Dec. 7, 1845, inPottsville, Schuylkill Co., Pa. His father was anative of Dolkeith, Scotland, where his life until histwenty-first year was spent, when he emigrated toAmerica and located in Schuylkill County, Pa., en-gaging in the coal business. He died in December,1873; was twice married,—first, to Isabella Penman,of Scotland, and had nine children; second, MaryBast, of Pottsville, and had eleven childreu. In 1857,the father having removed to Porter township, in thatcounty, Alexander F. was employed either in laborupon the farm or in mills owned by his father. OnAug. 2, 1862, he enlisted in Company B, One Hun-dred and Twentv-ninth Regiment Pennsylvania Vol- 602 HISTORY OF DAUPHIN unteers, serving nine months. On the 30th of June,1863, enlisted in Company E, Thirty-ninth RegimentPennsylvania Volunteer Militia, serving during theemergency. On the 20th of January, 1864, he joinedCompany G, Seventh Regiment Pennsylvania VeteranVolunteers, in which he continued until the muster-ing out of the regiment, Aug. 23,1865. Mr. Thomp-son resumed employment in coal-mines in variousparts of the State until 1871, when after an intervalspent in study and business he began the study oflaw, and was admitted to the bar in 1876. The sameyear he established himself at Lykens, where he hascontinued to reside in the practice of his Thompson was elected to the Legislature, sessionof 1881, and re-elected to that of 1883.
