041116-N-0696M-042 Pacific Ocean (Nov. 16, 2004) - Seaman Catalina Vega, of Phoenix, Az., practices signal paddle communication prior to a refueling-at-sea (RAS) with the Military Sealift Command (MSC) oiler USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204). The paddles, a communication tool between the ships, are designed to eliminate confusion during the RAS by using standardized movements for certain procedures. The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was refueled with over one million gallons of fuel during the at-sea evolution and is currently underway in the Pacific Ocean undergoing routine carrier operations.
