Rocket travel parody, 1909. Four German soldiers acting out a comic scene, riding a rocket or large artillery shell equipped with a horse's head. They are carrying a flag, an accordion, a barrel, a flask of spirits, and signs that refer to home (German: Heimath) and mountain landscapes (German: Senne). The soldiers are also wearing spurs on their boots. A few years after this photograph (taken in 1909) artillery technology would advance markedly during World War I, and horse-drawn guns would be replaced by mechanised ones. In the inter-war period, work on missiles would lead to rocketry, which would in turn lead to space travel after World War II.
