These seemed to electrifythe fox, his hair bristled, and for a moment helooked very fierce; but almost instantly a changecame over him, he lay down, opened his mouth,and fairly laughed as the dog became more andmore puzzled. These varied scenes lasted forhalf an hour, until the hound uttered one pro-longed howl and gave up the struggle. Thereupon the fox became quiet, resting in aposition half concealed by a stump, where hecould watch every movement of the dog. Afterthe dog had passed, the fox sat up on hishaunches and watched him until he was out ofsight, when, almost instantly, the fox turned anddisappeared among the low bushes which skirtedthe maple grove. This performance was repeated almost to theletter on the following day. The situation wasnow perfectly clear to me.
