The principle of Applique is that ofplacing^satin, velvet, or cloth, upon afoundation, and tacking them down—in a similar manner to Braiding. Thepatterns may be cut out in paper. The edges andfibres of leaves, flowers, &c. are to be braided, andthe centres to be worked with purse-silk. Workthe centres of flowers with French knots ; in orderto effect which, the silk must be twisted roundthe 110 netting, crochet, Grounding. Begin from the centre and work downwards, andyou will thus avoid soiling the wool. In CrossStitch work one way, and afterwards cross prevent fastenings of wool from coming to-gether, leave off before you come to the fasteningsof the row preceding. Take short needlesful ofwool for light grounds, so as to preserve the colourfree from soil. Draw the ends through, as you con-clude, on the wrong side, and cut them close grounding in Tent Stitch on a dark ground,work straight across from right to left. TentStitch in single wool must not have more thanfourteen threads canvas to the inch: Cross Stitch,twenty threads. General Instructions. When coarse canvas is chosen for working inCross Stitch with double wool, it should be ofeighteen threads or more to the inch.
