Beauty perception. Computer image of an average male Caucasian face distorted to show masculinisation (left) and feminisation (right). The average male Caucasian face was produced by combining the features of 25 volunteers aged between 19 and 23. The face was then distorted on a computer to enhance particular features. For instance, to masculinise a face, the jaw and brows were made more prominent. To feminise, the lips were made fuller, and the face given a younger look. Both male and female test subjects found the feminised face more attractive, seeing the masculinised one as more dishonest and violent.
