When he Avas thirteen yearsof age his parents moved to Racine, Wis., where he continued in attendanceupon the public school. A short time before he was to graduate and whenhe was less than eighteen years old the Civil War broke out and he enlistedApril 24, 1861, in Co. F, 2d Wisconsin Volunteers. This regiment after-wards became a part of the famous Iron Brigade. He enlisted as whatwas known as a three months man, but at the expiration of that period here-enlisted for the war.
