Venice, Italy - 5 September 2003 Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. At the very heart of historic Venice is St Marks Square, graced by three iconic buildings - St Marks Basilica, the Ducal Palace and Bell Tower. The first church at St Marks dates from the 9th century; the present, lavish basilica, constructed in Byzantine style, was consecrated in 1084-5 CE. Its extravagant exterior is covered with statues, domes, gilding and mosaics. Here we see St Mark's from a window in the Doge's Palace
